What is a molcajete?

A molcajete is an ancient, traditional tool used in Mexican cuisine for grinding, blending and mixing ingredients. It is a large, bowl-shaped mortar made from volcanic stone, usually basalt or andesite. The molcajete consists of two pieces: a round bowl called the mortex and a curved pestle called the tejolote.

The molcajete has been used by Mexicans for centuries as an effective way to prepare meals. In Mexico it is still used to make salsas, guacamole and other food items such as tamales. A good molcajete will be made from smooth black lava rock that has been polished in order to create its distinctive shape. The porous surface of the lava rock helps keep sauces thicker and helps the grind spices more evenly. As an added bonus, the natural roughness of the rocks can also help exfoliate your hands!

Using a molcajete is easy – just add ingredients like garlic, onions or vegetables into the mortar and use the tejolote to grind them into a fine paste or sauce. You can also use this tool to mix up margaritas or smoothies if you're feeling adventurous! Unlike using a blender or food processor, using a molcajete gives many dishes an authentic Mexican flavor that is just not replicated by modern equipment alone. It's also much less noisy than most kitchen appliances!
